Jurassic 5 founding member Chali 2na to headline Emerald Cup; Chat on KSLG

The ninth annual Emerald Cup is happening on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the Mateel Community Center. Not only doeas the event boast an expansive lineup of medical cannabis competitors and prominent pro-marijuana guest speakers, the event’s musical headliner is one of the most talented alternative-hip-hop MCs on the West Coast. Chali 2na is known by the masses as a founding member of the now defunct alt-hip-hop staple Jurassic 5 (J5), a frequent collaborator with the latin-tinged group Ozomatli (Ozo) and as the “verbal Herman Monster” -- his famed opening line in the J5 hit “What’s Golden.” With his staple baritone voice, he and the hip-hop-funk-soul fusion band House of Vibe will perform at the all-day shindig along with live-electro performer Irwin’s Conspiracy. More here.

On Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. PST Myles will interview Chali. Tune in! We hear Chali has a story about a cease-and-desist letter from a Los Angeles Laker...

Happy Almost-Birthday, HSU

Our local university is gearing up for what looks to be a yearlong celebration.

From HSU:

HSU Looks Ahead to Centennial Celebration

Humboldt State University will soon mark its 100th year, with a full academic calendar of events and activities to celebrate the milestone.

The fun starts Aug. 24, 2013 with a Kick-Off Party the Saturday before Fall classes begin. It continues with a variety of activities across campus and in the community, as well as birthday-themed events across the country for alumni. A Centennial-themed Homecoming & Family Weekend will be Sept. 27-28, 2013, and a Founder’s Day Event is planned for April 2014.

At the May 2013 Commencement Ceremonies, the campus will recognize the Centennial Class. The next year, in May 2014, the campus will recognize the New Century Class.

“Humboldt State’s Centennial will be a wonderful opportunity to look back at all we have accomplished, and to look forward to a future filled with possibility,” says HSU President Rollin Richmond. “There is such a large community of people who care about HSU, and I hope they find a way to be a part of this celebration.”

KSLG's annual Warm & Fuzzy Clothing Drive is on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012

Hey Sluggies! Please start collecting your unused or gently-worn jackets, pants, socks, sweaters, gloves and even underwear -- the KSLG Warm & Fuzzy Clothing Drive returns on Friday, December 7th! We broadcast live from 6am-6pm. DJ Monica Topping will host the morning shift, with DJ Myles handling 12pm-6pm.

Betty Chinn herself will stop by to oversee the donations and talk about the community's needs.

All your donations help those in need and stay in this area, they'll be distributed by Betty's Blue Angels. When you enter the Co-Op, our table will be the first thing you see. We're

looking for gently-worn jackets, pants, socks, sweaters, gloves and even underwear. "As in years past, we will take just about anything within reason. Someone wanted to donate old fishing equipment once. I thanked her, but declined," said KSLG morning host John Matthews. “Every time I see Betty Chinn I’m overwhelmed with a desire to give her an enormous hug, but I always get a little tongue-tied. I mean, here’s a person that’s hung out with POTUS and Bono,” added KSLG afternoon host Myles Cochrane. “Anytime we can help her in any way -- warm clothes, a few extra bucks -- anything, it makes a positive, humanitarian impact on our neck of the redwoods. And I can vibe with that.” [Top Photo: Betty Chinn, second from left, chillin' with Bono. Bottom photo: Warm & Fuzzy Clothing Drive circa 2009]
