Tsunami Test in King Salmon 1/14/11

According to the Redwood Tsunami Working Group, King Salmon is about to get lit up next Saturday: 

"On January 14, 2011 the Redwood Coast Tsunami Working Group (RCTWG), in conjunction with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, PG&E and the residences in and around the community of King Salmon will be participating in a community wide Tsunami Evacuation Drill.

 "Located directly across from the mouth of Humboldt Bay, King Salmon is at substantial risk to both near and distant source tsunamis. In recent months members of the RCTWG have been working with PG&E to identify high ground for this small coastal community and are ready for a test run of the plans that have been put in place.  

 

"On Saturday January 7, 2012 members of the RCTWG will be canvassing King Salmon distributing information packets regarding the upcoming Tsunami Evacuation Drill. On Wednesday January 11, 2012 at 6 p.m. there will be a town hall meeting at the Humboldt Grange, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka, where community members will be able to get more 

information.

 

"There will be brief presentations by representatives from the RCTWG, Humboldt County OES, NWS, HSU and PG&E to explain the planning process, describe what the event will entail and answer any questions community members may have.  

 

 "Residents of King Salmon will be offered a free spaghetti dinner courtesy of Pacific Watershed Associates.  Afterwards, a free class entitled “Living on Shaky Ground,” will be taught by Judy Warren of the Humboldt State University Regional Training Institute from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  

 

"Pre-registration is required 499-0754 as seating may be limited.

In the days leading up to the drill temporary Tsunami Evacuation route signs will be posted and at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Saturday January 14 the Tsunami sirens located at the PG&E Power Plant with be switched on. Residences and visitors of King Salmon will be directed to a 

trail head at the base of Buhne Point.  From here participants will be directed up the slope along a foot trail to a designated evacuation spot.  

 

"The siren being used for Saturday’s drill has a range that can vary significantly depending on weather conditions.  People could possibly hear the siren if they are within five miles of King Salmon. This includes neighboring communities within Fields Landing, Humboldt Hill and 

Spruce Point.
